A Bucolic Sunday

It was a glorious fall day - crisp and cool with the sun shining brightly. With no plans for the day, we took a trip north to Tarrytown, NY to visit Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture.

Stone Farm is both working farm and educational center. What's more, it grows its livestock and vegetables traditionally, naturally and organically.

The animals were relatively free, and had the space to roam and play as nature intended. The pigs were rooting, snorting through the mud and eating. The turkeys were gobbling and strutting. The chickens were cooing and laying their eggs. And, the sheep were eating hay and grass. There was even a sheep dog who sleepily guarded the flock.

What's more, the animals rotate the patures, grazing the land one at a time and working together in ecological balance. Even the veggies looked happy - housed in a tempered greenhouse with a rotating roof, so they could "go outside" on nice days. To top it off, the farm's harvest is used to feed diners at the Blue Hill at Stone Barn's or sold locally.

If only all of our food was produced on idilic farms like Stone Barn's.
