Red Meat/Red Bull: Same Difference?

It happened again. As I was enjoying the second or maybe third bite of my filet mignon (prepared medium-rare), I felt a surge of energy coursing through my veins. I was no longer chilly from the damp Boston night; I was chatting a little louder and with more expression than when we first settled into our evening; and my hands were shaking.

I haven’t found an explanation as of yet, but each time I indulge in a piece of red meat, I experience symptoms similar to drinking a can of Red Bull.

Friends and I were at Mooo…., a modern steakhouse in Boston’s Beacon Hill, to celebrate the Fourth of July. As each of us enjoyed our meals, I apologized ahead of time for my imminent behaviour change. After 8oz of red meat, I ignite into a fireball of energy where I resemble a five-year old with ADD.

When I asked how red meat affected them, they each explained that it usually makes them feel tired and lethargic. Most of those I've asked associate red meat to these feelings. So, why is it that red meat leaves me abuzz with energy, feeling as if I could run a marathon? Could it be because I only eat red meat a handful or two times a year? Does frequency of intake make a difference? Hmmm…

Aside of the side effects, Mooo… is a treat. If you’re ever in Boston, you must make your way over. The food is excellent, the décor modern and cool, but I’ve one warning – leave room for dessert. I recommend the lemon meringue pie – what an exceptional presentation!
