Cheers to Canada

Last night a few Canucks (transplants and visitors) and I convened at Bua, an East Village Irish pub, where we raised our glasses to toast Canada on its birthday.

When living in Canada, I loved Canada Day more for the day off and the fireworks than for what it symbolized. But now, living away from home, I cherish the day for all that it stands for. Its acceptance of diversity, its rather liberal politics and social benefits, and its global peacekeeping efforts. Of course, there's always room for improvement, but all in all, it's a country to be proud of. And, thinking back to the group last night, I'm not the only one!
