How do you like them apples?

Who would have thought a bag of apples could lead to so much work.

Since my apple expedition a couple of weeks ago, I've been peeling, coring, slicing and mixing apples for what feels like eternity. Last night, I finally used the last of my orchard-fresh apples. All I can say is if I don't see another apple again, it'll be too soon!

Here's a sampling of the fruits of my labour.

Apple Crostata: This Giada DiLaurentiis recipe is a favourite of mine that I've used time and time again. The pie crust is sweet, moist and flaky. Plus, since it's an open-faced pie, even a sloppy execution can look rustic and authentic!

Apple Pockets: My mother, who owns a huge sub-zero freezer and myriad pie plates suggested I just make several pies now and freeze them for later. However, living in smaller quarters than she this was a no-go. So, I compromised by making more than a dozen personalized apple pockets. I'm sure I'll appreciate these the next time company comes over!

Butter Spiced Apples: Here, I simply sauteed apple slices for a few minutes in some butter, sugar(white and brown) and spices (nutmeg, cinnamon and a little cayenne).

Chicken & Apple Salad: Tired of all the sweet baking, I decided to incorporated the apple into dinner. I was a little wary of fruit at dinner, but the apples added a mighty crunch to the salad.

Apple Share: When is enough enough? When the look of an apple could actually turn your stomach, I'd say you're about there! To relieve myself of apples, I packed a bag of apples, created a little sign "Orchard Fresh Apples. Help Yourself" and placed them in a well-trafficked area of my office. By lunch hour they were gone!

Apple Zeppole: Before leaving the orchard we had a little taste of apple cider donuts. I needed more. To feed my craving and use up the last two remaining apples, I tried my hand at these Italian-style donuts (or as Nonna E calls them, doh-nats with an emphasis on the last syllable). They were sprinkled with sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. I gave one or two a try, but to relieve myself from the temptation I sent them with Mr. Oh to share at his office.
