Personally, Turkey Day has never been a holiday of significance. With such strong ties to my family's Italian culture, we just never quite got Thanksgiving. My mother, of course, made the turkey and traditional fixings, and we gathered around the table like most North American families, but none of us really enjoyed the food and most of it went to waste. And, within a couple of hours of the meal we were hungry and asking for "real" food.
This year, to take advantage of my four-day weekend, my parents came for a visit. To welcome them into our home and pay at least some homage to Thanksgiving, I made a lasagna using ground turkey.
I was more than a little nervous of having my mother taste test my food, and unbeknown to her, I anxiously awaited her commentary. Before taking a bite, she lifted the plate to inspect her slice. To this she said, "very thin pasta - good." Finally after a taste, she gave a nod, a smile and said "good."
Success!
